Do you have a horse??

Post by StLedge on Wed Jan 07, 2009 3:37 pm

In another thread, I made it known that I would be forming a ‘posse’ for the party on the 21/12/2012, which in Mayan beliefs, would be the end of the world................or at least something. It is possible the end of the world has been exaggerated, but I would rather be ‘overdressed’ than caught off guard!!

Anyone got a problem with literalising a Christian metaphor and applying it to Mayan beliefs?

And just for the sake of being pedantic it's supposed to be pale green for death.

I'm assuming you're not Christian since passing yourself off as one of the horsemen of the apocalypse would see you burn in hell for heresy. So since the idea doesn't have a religious aim what do you plan to do with your horses when the door opens in the sky and Satan's rule through man is destroyed by the Messiah? Personally I'll probably be off to be baptised if any of it happens, but good luck with whatever you're doing.

Other than you?

Incidently, Mayan influences have been found in Christianity

To Willy - Yes, religion is bad. I'll ignore the attempt to rile me and agree with the general principle given the number of people who have died in the name of a God whose existence they can't prove.

To randomsam - What's the point of robbing a train if the world is coming to an end? Even if you pulled off the biggest heist in history (unlikely) nobody would be around to remember it and you wouldn't be able to spend your ill-gotten gains.

To StLedge - Lots of influences have been found in Christianity because it's a fictitious text based on other ancient beliefs and a lot of astrology, but that doesn't mean you can just mix and match. Unless you're starting your own sect, in which case I'm fine with it. Don't knock on my door looking for members though.

Sorry if you're a dreamer, (both in the sense that I apologise and that I feel sympathy for you) but I tend to live my life by logic. I deal with what I can prove and the rest is irrelevant. Apart from string theory, but I'm not a physicist so those things don't really bother me either.

The bible is made up of the writings of ancient civilisations the Mayans, Sumerians, the Osmonds collated and offered as one book, as are other regious 'books' , which are blindly followed. So it isnt really mix and matching.

But choosing which parts you choose to live by and which parts you find will stop you from doing the things you want is definitely mix-matching. When I see people who claim to be 'men of God' but then proceed to womanise, take drugs, drink and all the other fun things regular sinners do, I feel like puking in their mouths. Religion is an excuse to be a fucking hypocrite. It riles me how so many people can lack the responsibility for their own actions. And the whole thing about 'God's plan'; is that not a little naive to think that there's some invisible guy up there who actually gives a flying fuck about what you do?

The Book of Revelation isn't a Mayan text though, and that is specifically what you were discussing. That particular text was written to foretell the end of the age (not the world), and to show the presence of God despite the challenges that were being faced by many people around the time it was written (c.100 AD). So really putting that together with a Mayan prediction of the apocalypse is mixing and matching.

Willy, calm down. People will always be hypocrites. All people are born to be bad. We lie, cheat and steal to fuck everyone else over and secure our own claim on whatever resources we set our hearts on. That's just the way we'll always be and you can't change that. Nature forces us to compete and as a result every person will cut the throat of their neighbour to get what they want. If you differ from that you don't fit in and everyone else will exploit what they perceive as your weakness.

I remember being in Rome a few years back and there was all this panic all of a sudden. Me nor anyone I was with knew what was going on, so we asked the locals what it was. Turned out the Pope was on his way in his carriage made of gold. Within minutes, all these peasant villagers started to appear in their droves. They were going up to the Pope's carriage and throwing money and jewellery at it. I'm talking about the most peasant-looking people, the sort of people who looked like they hadn't had a decent plate of pasta in weeks and they're giving their last bit of money to this dude who already has more money than Bono and MJ put together. At that point, I felt ill and I wanted to say something, but I had enough respect to just let it happen. Like they say, "when in Rome...."

Religion is, has and always will be about, a) controlling masses of people, b) money, and c) excuses. It's a shame, but I actually can't deal with being around religious people. Their outlook on life is so different to mine that I'd be stupid if I thought I could have any common ground with them.

You might have a different view of humanity DD, but that's mine and it seems pretty accurate to most situations I've found myself in.

Willy, by allowing an evil to happen under your witness you are as culpible as if you were causing it yourself.

Now I know you're winding me up. I'd like to see you oppose it and be chased by 10,000 angry Romans. Now that'd be a YouTube clip to savour.
