Barcelona

Post by arover on Sun May 29, 2011 11:13 am

I watched the final last night and quite honestly they were superb. I could watch that football all day, it's a downright pleasure to watch. At their best (which they undoubtedly were last night) they simply purr. They would be serious candidates for best club side ever without Messi but with him they have it nailed on for me and I've seen them all since the mid '60s. The only teams that come close are the Milan team with the Dutch axis of Gullit, Van Basten & Rijkaard and the total footballing Ajax of the '70s.

The Dark Side have nothing to be ashamed of they would've beaten anybody with ease last night and all this with Mascherano at centre back. In this day and age of super fit, super organised teams it is all the more difficult for individual brilliance to shine but there is individual brilliance and then there is Messi. He's already in the top 4 of all time for me and anyone saying he's never done it at a world cup has to take into account that when he last appeared in one Argentina had a performing clown as manager who was probably guarding his own reputation too.

The only team ever that I can think of also being able to perform with such artistry at that level is the 1970 Brazilians, watching Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro, Villa and Busquets interchange with each other could even justify the absurd prices charged for admission and puts me in mind of Jairzinho, Rivelino, Gerson, Tostao, Carlos Alberto and Pele. What position does Messi play? You can't mark someone who does that. What he does is a whole redefinition of deep lying centre forward.

Also fair play to Ferguson for accepting defeat graciously and acknowledging his opponents' gulf in class and ability it puts him in a whole different class of human being to the distasteful Mourinho who has made a massive faux pas in his reaction to losing to them in the semi final.

Superb stuff Barcelona. I applaud you.

If I were a United fan, Ferguson's constant beaming smile after the game would have pissed me off a little bit - it came across like he didn't really give a shit, although if he hadn't been like that then some people would have inevitably been all like, "look at him sulking, he's so unprofessional, such a sore loser", so I suppose he couldn't really win regardless of what he did. :/

I'd agree that they're the best team ever. I can't remember anyone playing football like that, and despite not being old enough to go toooooo far back, I spent a lot of my youth watching old football videos. This Barca team would beat any club or international side in history. Pele's Brazil don't even match up.

They are mesmerising to watch. To see a team that can tear the opposition apart so easily despite not having a player in the Centre Forward area of the pitch is amazing. Messi has it all, vision, dribbling skills, eye for goal, 53 goals speak for themselves. There's no point in arguing who is better between Messi and Ronaldo because for me, Ronaldo doesn't even come close.

Ronaldo is still absolutely devastating, though. Messi is the best, but I'd say Ronaldo isn't as far behind as you say he is. Real Madrid just have inferior players. If Messi played for them they'd still lose the title to Barca. Also take into mind that if you're not winning trophies you get forgotten about, but Real scored over 100 goals in the league last season.

I still prefer the '92 Barça side. Hristo Stoichkov is my favourite player of all time.

That team also had Ronald Koeman in it, but lets not forget they were twatted 4-0 in the final by Milan who lorded it over them that night.

Nobody could do that to this lot.

I'd like to see how that A.C. team would fair against 2011 Barcelona. I reckon A.C. were the better side.

I think that side was underestimated just because they played the Italian way. They may not have been better but they knew just how to get the result.

My sunday league side would stop Barca easily...for about 20 minutes before the game was forfeit for us getting too many red cards.

Arsenal showed what happens when you play "the beautiful game" against Barca. 0 shot at goal and 24% possession Laughing
