Too Many Of Ours In Here

Post by arover on Thu Apr 14, 2011 3:01 pm

I reckon:

Benni McCarthy has pocketed a £2m pay-off after being released by West Ham following a dismal 13 months at the club, making just 11 appearances in that period.

But the South African isn't the worst culprit for earning ridiculous sums of money in return for very little...

The retired Dutchman spent four seasons at Chelsea where he picked up close to £40,000 a week and made four first team starts. And to top it off he claims, "this world is about money, so when you are offered those millions you take them... I may be one of the worst buys in the history of the Premiership but I don't care." Unsurprisingly, there were no takers when he left Chelsea so he decided to hang up his boots.

Rumours circulating this week suggest the Frenchman has been released by QPR after three months and less than 90 minutes of football in the Championship. No official word yet but he came on at half-time last weekend with the league leaders level at bottom of the table Scunthorpe, and trotted off the field at full-time a 4-1 loser. Not great for the CV.

When he was offered a pay rise of £7,000 at Celtic, the Dutchman claimed, "£7,000 may be good for a homeless person but it's not good enough for a top class player. He later infuriated Forest players and fans by going on strike from the club when they refused to sell him in the Summer of 1998 - instead choosing to train with his old club NAC Breda in Holland until he finally returned in November. When he scored his first goal after returning to the club, his team-mates refused to celebrate with him.

The former Croatian international picked up a generous £20,000 a week during two-and-a-half years at Villa Park. He started two games in that time and made seven sub appearances, which work out to more than £280,000 a game. Not bad, eh?

Southampton spent £3.5m on the Ecuadorian who repaid them with one goal and 11 games in three years. Saints boss Gordon Strachan was so fed up at the time, he blasted: "I've got more important things to think about. I've got a yoghurt to finish by today. That can be my priority rather than Agustin Delgado." Brilliant.

Serie B's leading scorer with 20 goals in 34 games before moving to England, Grabbi filled Blackburn Rovers with hope upon his arrival but this was tragically short lived. Two-and-a-half years and two goals later, the club finally managed to say Ciao and send him back to Italy.

Winston Bogarde has got to be the worst though, but Chelsea must take some of the blame for offering him that much.
