On Messi

Post by arover on Thu Apr 08, 2010 1:16 pm

this from a contributor in the Independent:

From one who teaches Soccer to children may I say a great big thank you
to Lionel Andre Messi.More important than the Dandy and Beano comic
rhetoric about the fastest gun in the west, you gave all the children
who are told by their teachers and coaches that they are too small to
make the team (yes folks, even in 2010 the folly ensues) new hope and
inspiration with a breathtaking display of unadulterated brilliance. Are
you 7 foot and 16 stone?No --far from it.Can you play the game?Just a
bit.How do you gesture after a goal? You smile.God bless you son!

Love it.

No mention of Barcelona paying for Messi to take several courses of growth hormone, then.

Indeed, wasn't that one of the reasons they didn't have to pay compensation for him?

5' 7". Not really tiny, but smaller than the average bloke.

Probably would've been without the hormones. Who knows? It doesn't really matter that much anyway. Aaron Lennon is only 5' 5", Ludovic Giuly is 5' 4", so is Sebastien Giovinco, and they all play for top European clubs. (Except Lennon who plays for someone in North London who don't matter enough to have a name). bounce

Are Paris Saint-Germain really a 'top' European club?

Not really now, but they have been in the past, but I take your point. But Giuly played for Barca, so my point is still valid that the height of a player isn't really a big factor. I guess the smaller ones just have to be that bit more special.

I thought Leeds were still a big club.

They're a big club, but not a top club.

Signed from Stockport in the '60s, he was about 2 feet nine inches tall. Little winger, tricky as fuck used to tee it up all the time for Jimmy Fryatt's head.
