Well I never knew that!

Post by Guest on Tue Nov 10, 2009 2:24 pm

Seems pretty dead on here so I will share with you a little bit of pointless info I learnt today.

"The Seahorses" the mid 90's indie group set up by ex Stone Rose guitarist is actually an anagram of "He hates Roses", although this is thought to be a coincidence.

Anyone else learnt anything pointless today?

I learned (is it learned or learnt?) that journalists who visit Sesame Street are not allowed to ask Bert and Ernie if they are gay.

It is learned if you are American, and learnt if you are British. The same rule applies to dreamed and dreamt. However, the ed ending has in recent years become universally acceptable.

DD you may be right within this context but I'm sure "learned" was historically British as in "my learned friend".

I've been wrong before though...

1987 I think it was!

In that context, "learned" means "taught" as in an educated person or someone who shows profound knowledge. It's pronounced "ler-ned".
