Republic Day

Post by arover on Fri Oct 30, 2009 7:49 am

Yesterday was Republic day here in Turkey, it's the main secular holiday of the year and celebrates the founding of the modern Turkish republic by Attaturk in 1923. It is celebrated with gusto and there are all sorts of events. Here in Kas all the children march accompanied by bands in the morning then in the evening there is a massive party in the town square with tables laid out everywhere and much food and drink consumed. There is more music and much flag waving and drum beating followed by a firework display and more music and dancing.

There is much patriotism and the national anthem and the flags are very much in evidence, reverence for Attaturk knows no bounds and there are pictures of him everywhere. It does not feel unhealthy as it is pure pride in their relatively new country and is not directed in a negative or belligerent way. I thoroughly enjoyed the day which also marks the official end of the tourist season and am left nursing a hangover.
