The Bad Lieutenant 2009 - Sort of remake of the Harvey Keitel movie of the same name from the '80s I think. The original was much darker than this though this one is not exactly bright and optimistic. Nicholas Cage plays a New Orleans cop in the post Katrina era who is heavily using drugs, heavily leaning on a number of people and in to just about every racket imaginable. The film sees him navigate his way through disaster after disaster as the darkness increasingly closes in on him.

Death at a Funeral 2010

What can I say?

Second date is in the balance.

Is this Death At A Funeral 2?

I reckon I saw one a couple of years ago and it wasn't half bad.

Liking Colin Murray.

It's a remake of the 2007 one (which I haven't seen). Don't even bother, mate, just keep whatever fond memories of the original you have intact!!

I'm not sure I even want to watch the original as it may invoke memories of the recent one!

As an aside I just received a text from my "date" thanking me for a wonderful evening, so if watching that shit was wonderful, date 2 is not gonna happen!!!

Unless of course she just thought "I" was wonderful?

Un Prophete 2009 - A young Arab man is sent to a French prison where he becomes useful to the Corsican mob who pretty much run the joint. Very gritty drama, extremely well done and ultimately believable. Perhaps a tad overlong.

I just downloaded this last night, may watch tonight, are the subtitles good as I may have a few this evening? Or should I watch stone cold sober?

I watched it a couple of months ago, it was enjoyable. I'd give it a 7.5, an 8 would be pushing it for me as it just fell down a bit towards the end, but definitely worth a look.

Gritty stuff.

You're probably right, I possibly gave it 8 because it was French.

Nah, matter of opinion, innit? Smile

Without spoiling it I felt the final couple of scenes let it down a bit. It was really well done as a whole, though.

Invicus 2009 - Morgan Freeman as Mandela in the story of his support for the Springboks, universally loathed by the blacks in apartheid South Africa, as President in the run up to the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Freeman is superb as Mandela, utterly convincing in the role and this plus some very good sporting scenes makes the film.

I was impressed.

Unthinkable - 2010

Psycho-thriller with Samuel L Jackson as a scarily good interrogator and Michael Sheen showing his versatility as a Muslim extremist, Brian Clough or Tony Blair he ain't in this!

A good watch - 7. Both leads are pretty good in this.

Granted the characters were far above the storyline, but still watchable.

The Book Of Eli 2010 - This is a kind of stylised version of an apocalyptic future paying more homage to Mad Max than The Road. It's got a perfectly adequate Denzil in it and a decent enough darling whose name escapes me also Miss Jones from Rising Damp (how the fuck did that happen) and Tom Waits pops up too not forgetting Gary Oldman. Essentially Oldman runs the show in town and wants the only bible knocking about which Denzil has, the problem is Denzil's a fucking ace fighter and smart too. Not sure about this film, it was OK but there was a bit too much style over substance for my liking.

6.5.

After watching The Book of Eli one of our house guests put this on but I went to bed. He rated it quite highly anyway it's on my list.

Brothers 2009 - 2 Brothers from an average American blue collar family, one we see leaving prison and the other off to fight in Afghanistan. Jail bird provides support to soldiers wife & children, soldier is captured by evil Taliban, tortured & presumed dead. Wife snogs jail bird but doesn't shag him, soldier returns from dead after being forced to kill one of his comrades by said evil Taliban.

SOLDIER can't cope big time, nothing will ever be the same again. Not too bad a film reasonably sensitively handled and well acted. Taliban portrayed a tad one dimensionally.

The Green Zone 2010 - Matt Damon's in this Iraq war caper, in fact it's not really a caper at all (except perhaps towards the end where the chase gets a bit silly). Treats the whole sham of the WMD search seriously and raises a good few legitimate points. Reminds us what a sad mess that country has been left in. For me probably a shade better than the Hurt Locker which I didn't think merited the staatus of best movie at the Oscars.

I watched this last night too, couldn't help making comparisons with the Hurt Locker and found this was better. One critiscism, the Matt Damon of old would never lose a fight with that Special Ops guy.

Whatever Works

Just watched this in bed on Sunday morning, made my morning! I love Larry David and if you're a fan of Woody Allen then he is just a taller, grouchier form of him! So many great one-liners in this and some of the characters from differing parts of America are just great. It's hard to pidgeon hole but there is a bit of romance in there, a little slapstick and a lot of "Curb-esque" Larry for all you fans!!

It's better than a 7.

Shutter Island

This is the remake with Leonardo Di Crapio
I havnt watched the original, but thought the movie was okay, i thought the twist was going to be something completely different.

Was ok but not brilliant
