It was about the fierce competition in table tennis in Japan. Two high school friends from Japan took part in the world games one of them was supposed to be the best player in the world but he was a depressed case who never smiled, the other was a cheery fella. However he was too kind a player and did not like to thrash his opponent so lost a few matches out of guilt. They lost out to China first time round but there were a few tournaments so later on they got revenge on China. Then in the final of the singles tournament both friends faced each other. The depressed fella lost/maybe let his friend win. But the final photo showed the guy finally smiling with the actual winner. It was a class film. 8/10.

Does sound a bit iffy. It's about table tennis. How long can you go on about table tennis. To be honest any film about sports is bound to be pretty poor. The one exception is of course Cool Runnings.

Baseball movie with Robert Redford & Glen Close from the mid '80s. A good sports film indeed. Check it out:

Field of Dreams is quite good too.

Here's a review of it from a friend of mine from another board:

Green Street Hooligans 2(2009). Yes, they made a film about west ham and millwall fans fighting in the slammer. Really bizarre and about as purile as you can get. This is not a football film it is a prison film where the tribalism is accidental. Nothing unique in the script, which is so ridiculous it does not make sense. Bizarre opening fight where west ham are fighting Millwall in prison but the Millwall fans look like Puerto Rican skin heads wearing white vests with swastika tattoos (you know the ones) having just flown straight out of South Central in LA. This film was definately made for the American market so just keep that in mind!

Oh dear, well anyway one thing is for sure, Millwall never seem to get the beating of west ham in any of these ridiculous films.

Field of Dreams is fucking atrocious. Without offering too much punnage on the fact it's based in fields of corn, that is one corny motherfucking film. Kevin Costner rarely does anything I've enjoyed. The Natural is okay, though. Not a huge baseball fan but you don't have to be to enjoy it.

Green Street 2? I think I'm busy having my spleen removed with a corkscrew on that particular day.

And LOL @ "the yoof".

Got to disagree on Field of Dreams though not Costner in general. I liked the film, found it quite unusual and warmed to the sentimentality on show for once.

I suppose Raging Bull qualifies as a sports film of sorts and that's a corker, one of the best.

On the subject of boxing films, 'Ali' is surprisingly good. I very rarely like Will Smith in anything, mainly because he usually plays Will Smith. But this is one of the times he actually 'acts'.

Ali's OK but not a patch on Raging Bull which ranks right up there.
