The Reader - 2008

One of the oscar nominees for best picture and I can see why. It's very low key, understated affair that tells the story of an adolescent's relationship with an older woman one summer in Germany in the fifties. The boy cherishes these memories but as a law student attends a trail where his former lover is accused of mass murder for her actions as an SS guard. The film probes the relationship from the man's point of view and also questions how people are capable of the actions previously described. Starring Kate Winslett and Ralph Fiennes it's a good effort but somehow I couldn't avoid thinking that it was maybe trying a bit too hard.

Last new film is Slumdog and agree with the above, it's awesome. One of those that I thought would be slow with not much happening and therefore rubbish. How wrong I was.

Last film was baseketball. Terrible terrible film. But I love it. Very rude/crude - what you'd expect from Matt Stone/Trey Parker but certainly has plenty of laughs. And as per usual with those two, it takes the piss out of America.

Got a few to watch that have been bought but not seen yet. Also need to get involved with the wire - a few people have told me it's brill.

If Dumb and Dumber is funny then Mrs. Doubtfire must be the most hilarious piece of artwork ever released. Wink

Re: The Last Film I Watched Was....

Happy Go Lucky - 2008 Mike Leigh's latest offering. I've been meaning to watch this one for a while and having done so I'm giving it 7 out of 10. Leigh's main strength has always been his observations of human behaviour and this one is no different. The main protaganists are a 30 year old female primary school teacher, her flat mate and her bad tempered driving instructor. The film takes a snapshot of their lives and I have to say that if anyone really behaved like the character in the title role all the time you would want to murder them. In short she's hardly believable.

It's quite well paced though but Sally Hawkins plays the Poppy character far too much in the vein of Brenda Blethyn in Life Is Sweet and that grates a little for me. Still worth a watch though just not one of his best.

I watched 1408 the other night. Filmisation of the Stephen King book. Usually things like that are pretty rubbish, but I quite enjoyed it. Not difficult to follow and one or two 'jumpy' scray moments, even if the film itself doesn't really scare.

Watched that with the woman a couple of months ago. We both thought the first hour was amazing and we were both really enjoying it, but it turns into bollocks after that. I mean, the bit where he trips out and he's at dinner with his ex-wife and there's that whole dream sequence, there's just no need for it, and it goes on for about 25 minutes. We both felt like the story took a wrong turn. Maybe we expected too much.

Mona Lisa Smile 2003 - Stumbled on this today and it reeled me in. It's a Mike Newell film about well feminism I suppose. Set in what is effectively a girl's finishing school on the east coast of America it concentrates on the waves created by the arrival of a liberal thinking art tutor.

Very well done, I approved.

Just shows how stupid I am. I'd never have expected Mike Newell to make a film about anything other than beating women or showing old ladies across to the kitchen.

The Man Who Cried 2000 - Seriously bad vehicle for Johnny Depp to play a brooding gypsy type who rides around Paris on a white horse. There is another story going on but it's totally insignificant.

Bag of old shite, avoid at all costs.

Haven't seen Depp do anything good for ages, which is a shame because he's a great actor.

First time I'm gonna disagree with you. I thought Transformers was one of the best films I've seen.

And yes, RW, I just released a small amount of man-fat thinking about Megan Fox.

I thought it could've been a lot better. It's still good, though, but not "10/10 - a masterpiece" like some halfwitted paper like The Sun gave it.
